The Vision of Scholar Phase
Our vision at YLA is to inspire our youth to become a SCHOLAR by accumulating knowledge through diligent study, seeking truth and understand through inspiration from God, and acting with integrity by living what they know to be true.
BECOME A SCHOLAR
So, you are ready to begin the journey of becoming a scholar! It seems that we have the misconception that the day we begin scholar phase we suddenly study 8 hours a day, read deep books and have deep discussions with deep insights. That is what the end result of the scholar process looks like, not the beginning. There are three main phases of development that we work through to become a scholar: we accumulate knowledge, seek truth and understanding and act with integrity.
SCHOLAR PHASES
v Apprentice Scholar: Accumulate Knowledge
v Journeyman Scholar: Seek Truth and Understanding
v Master Scholar: Act with Integrity
Apprentice Scholar: Accumulate Knowledge
Basic learning of facts, information, and abilities obtained through diligent study and experience in all areas of learning. Gather and analyze facts, organize and interpret information, identify patterns and relationships. Obtaining, creating, communicating, and applying knowledge are the overarching objectives of education.
Journeyman Scholar: Seek Truth and Understanding
“In addition to our rational minds, another dimension to gaining knowledge can give us guidance and understanding. It is the still and soft voice of His Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts and also to our minds.” (Seek Knowledge by the Spirit, Mathias Held, April 2019)
Understanding is added to knowledge and precedes intelligence. Using agency to act invites the Holy Spirit to teach through revelation. Knowledge certified as true by the Holly ghost yields understanding and produces an illumination, a comprehension, a perspective, and a depth of desire and commitment not obtainable through reason alone.
Master Scholar: Act with Integrity
The righteous application of knowledge and understanding in action and judgement in the development of Godlike character through faithful obedience. We use our moral agency to obtain and act in truth, to become agents who act, rather than objects that are acted upon; we become “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). (David A Bednar, Increase in Learning, p.63, 68, 70-73)
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
What does the Apprentice Scholar Phase look like?
Students are introduced to a more structured setting for learning, including having beginning homework. Students learn how to share ideas in a group setting and discuss principles and books. Usually, ages 12-14.
What does the Journeyman Scholar Phase look like?
Of their own initiative, students engage anxiously, press forward steadfastly, give effort, take action in their studies, show commitment and persistence, and engage in inquiry. Students begin to or are already studying regularly and being accountable to a mentor. They consistently fulfill their commitment to complete assignments in an effort to gain understanding through the Spirit. Usually ages 14-16.
What does the Master Scholar Phase look like?
The Master applies knowledge and understanding to teach, inspire, and share that skill with others, acting, and thereby changing the world around them. Youth, having acquired the skills in different areas, are now ready to DO what God wants them to do with their knowledge and understanding. They actively do the hard work of planning, creating, problem solving, study, by faith, and application. Usually ages 16-18.
